Step by Step

Step by Step days are designed to suit individual participants and accommodate mainly therapeutic and personal development, with the emphasis on physical and emotional health and wellbeing, as well as improving social skills and communication.

Participants' progress is supported via mutually agreed, long-term and daily goals and targets.

Key Participants:

Young People who have disabilities, learning difficulties and/or special educational needs.

Adults with long-term mental health issues, disabilities and/or learning difficulties.

What kinds of activities do we offer? 
  • General conservation work

  • Light gardening/horticultural work

  • Green woodworking

  • Habitat creation

  • Bushcraft activities e.g. practical skills such as firelighting, shelter building, whittling, tracking.

How many people take part in a session?

There can be anything from 2 to 10 people attending. There is an appropriate staff to participant ratio but please discuss any additional one-to-one care requirements with us.

Will I need any experience or training?

No, all activities are targeted to an individual's needs and capabilities.

How long are the sessions?

A typical day is from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.

How long does the course last?

Courses are ongoing, on a rolling programme; for as long as you need them.

Does it cost anything?

Current day prices are available on request. Funding is normally accessed via an individual's Personal Health Budget (PHB), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or via the Local Authority, but can be personally funded.

Shorter term courses in our woodlands

Our Woodland EARTH for SEND courses are designed for adults and young people with disabilities, learning difficulties and/or special educational needs. Accommodating mainly therapeutic and personal development, the course also puts an emphasis on physical and emotional health and wellbeing as well as improving social skills and communication. 

Learn about: Tree & hedge planting * Formative tree pruning * Coppicing * Scrub & ride maintenance * Green woodwork * Hedge laying * Making green wood structures * Woodland art and crafts * Animal homes*  Bush craft (shelters, fires and cooking)*

These usually run as FREE  programmes for up to 10 people at all 3 of our woodland locations. They are for a fixed number of weeks and can be a good introduction to Green Light Trust for participants considering entering our Step by Step rolling programme.

Wheelchair access to our woodland sites may be weather dependent. Please discuss any additional requirements with us when booking.

FROM 19TH JULY 2021, WE ARE NO LONGER IN A POSITION TO ENFORCE ANY PREVIOUS REQUIREMENTS TO PROTECT INDIVIDUALS AGAINST COVID TRANSMISSION, FOR EXAMPLE, THE WEARING OF FACE COVERINGS. HOWEVER, WE WOULD ASK THAT ANYONE ATTENDING OUR PROGRAMMES IS MINDFUL OF THE RISK TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS AND TAKES WHAT THEY CONSIDER TO BE RESPECTFUL PRECAUTIONS WHILST IN THEIR GROUP; PARTICULARLY WE WOULD ENCOURAGE THE WEARING OF FACE COVERINGS WHEN USING OUR MINIBUSES, WHEN PREPARING OR SERVING FOOD, OR WHEN IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OTHERS. WHILST SOCIAL DISTANCING IS NO LONGER MANDATORY, WE WOULD ALSO ENCOURAGE ALLOWING OTHERS THEIR PERSONAL SPACE. WE DO HAVE IN PLACE VARIOUS HYGIENE MEASURES TO MINIMISE THE RISK OF TRANSMISSION OF DISEASE. WE WOULD ASK THAT YOU USE OUR HAND-CLEANING FACILITIES AND FOLLOW ANY GUIDANCE FROM STAFF RELATING TO SHARED TOOL ETC. USE.

IF YOU ARE DUE TO ATTEND A GROUP IN PERSON AND YOU KNOW YOU MIGHT HAVE CORONAVIRUS, OR YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ANY SYMPTOMS SIMILAR TO THOSE RELATED TO CORONAVIRUS (PERSISTENT COUGH, FEVER, LOSS OF TASTE/SMELL) PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND AND CONTACT US TO LET US KNOW SO THAT WE CAN INITIATE ANY NECESSARY TRACK AND TRACE ACTION. 

AS WITH ANY ACTIVITY THAT INVOLVES A GROUP OF PEOPLE AT THE MOMENT, THERE IS NO WAY TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE THE RISK OF CONTRACTING CORONAVIRUS. WE WOULD ASK ANYONE WHO IS IN A HIGHER RISK GROUP FOR CORONAVIRUS (E.G. PEOPLE WHO ARE, OR HAVE BEEN, SHIELDING), OR WHO HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO BE VACCINATED, TO CONSIDER THEIR PERSONAL HEALTH RISK VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE JOINING ONE OF OUR GROUPS.
