Castan is a mixed woodland, with remnants of conifer plantations and surrounded by pastures and heathland.

While the history of the woodland is relatively unknown, it is shown on the 1898 OS maps as woodland, and was most likely a much larger plantation, joining with the band of similar woodlands running along the main road through Kesgrave.

We have already discovered a number of interesting plant and animal species in the woodland, and very much hope this will continue, as we survey the woodland with the groups working there.
