Castan Woods, Martlesham, Ipswich IP5 3QN

Castan Wood, Martlesham, Ipswich is 26 acres of mixed deciduous woodland with some remnants of conifer plantations. Surrounded by pastures and heathland to the NE side of Ipswich the wood.

The wood has a large amount of Sweet Chestnut, which gives the woodland its name with a broad range of other tree species in this interesting woodland.

Whilst the history of the woodland is relatively unknown, it is shown on the 1898 OS maps as woodland and was most likely a much larger plantation joining with the band of similar woodlands running along the main road through Kesgrave.

We have already discovered a number of interesting plant and animal species in the woodland. We hope this will continue as we survey the woodland with the groups working there.
