Hunstein Cultural Exchange visit

30/01/2010

To celebrate our coming of age, a small group of our global kinship partners from Papua New Guinea will come to the UK during the first 2 weeks of July .

This special Cultural Exchange Visit will be led by Matthew Yafei, chief of the Eagle Clan, who came to plant our millennium yew in 2000. With him will be one male and one female representative from each of the two main language groups - and this will mark the first time that Hunstein Range women have ever travelled abroad.

Our PNG mentors, Serah Nerius and Simon Swale visited the Hunstein in December and, as Green Light volunteers, discussed the purpose of the trip with the villagers. Christie Constantine of Virgin Unite - also volunteering - accompanied them to film their discussions.

Here's a 10 minute taster video.

As a village to village experience, the exchange will be part-hosted by our own Lawshall community. While here, our guests will teach us how to build a ‘hauswin' (traditional rainforest ‘wind-house') and exchange ideas on nutrition.

IIED (International Institute for Environment and Development) have committed a generous grant towards the visit.
